Rekeying or changing the inside of a lock

Rekeying an old or new lock is accomplished by dismantling the lock, removing the cylinder and barrel then basically replacing the pins and possibly springs inside the tumbler to suit a new set of keys. This erases any old key which used to work the lock.

Rekeying locks will provide the user with a less costly alternative, rather than having to completely replace the locks. It should be noted that some cheaper brand locks may need to be replaced, but not to worry because the new locks can also be rekeyed or keyed alike to your existing key.

Should I rekey my home, business or rental?

With security in mind - when moving into an established home, business office or rental property it is a good idea to change the locks after all, one can never be sure who could hold keys or have copies of keys.

Does it make my home less secure if all my locks are keyed alike to the one key

No it does not make your home less secure having all your locks keyed alike. It is a personal preference however it does make things a lot more convenient having them keyed alike. Some people do like to have two different keys in case they are giving a cleaner, tradesperson or someone else access to their property who they don't entirely trust. For example if there are two locks on the front door, you can have them keyed differently and give the cleaner or tradesperson the key for only the bottom lock if you are not home.
